Peggy A. Farrell graduated from Occidental College in June 1994 with an A.B.A. in Politics and a Minor in Women's Studies. She received her Juris Doctor from the City University of New York School of Law at Queens College (CUNY) in 1999, a law school dedicated to training public interest lawyers. During law school, she clerked for the national office of the ACLU- Reproductive Freedom Project and the NAACP LDF. In 1998 she received the Ella Baker Civil Rights Fellowship to work for the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and worked in CCR's New York City office as well as traveling to Greenville, Mississippi to work in CCR's Southern Regional Office in conjunction with the CUNY Mississippi Project.
Since receiving her license to practice law in 2000, Peggy worked for Alan Burton Newman, P.C. (ABN) until 2004 where she handled exclusively plaintiff’s side employment discrimination matters. While at ABN, she was associate counsel in six jury trials, successfully obtaining three verdicts including $1.125 million in a sexual harassment case including an award of punitive damages (Hamilton v. First Transit, LASC Case No. BC262304, Jan. 16, 2003). In 2004 Peggy joined the civil rights law firm of Schonbrun DeSimone Seplow Harris & Hoffman, LLP as an associate in their Pasadena office working for partner Wilmer J. Harris. Her case load was substantially employment discrimination matters although she also handled cases involving police misconduct and wage and hour matters. In July 2006, she was associate counsel with Mr. Harris in a disability case involving an attorney who was terminated by his law firm when he disclosed he had Hepatitis C. The employee was awarded a total verdict of $1.1 million and substantial attorneys fees (LASC Case No. BC329157).
Peggy began working for the HIV/AIDS Legal Services Alliance (HALSA), as its Legal Director in May 2008, where she handled cases involving HIV/AIDS discrimination in employment and institutions, wrongful disclosure, denial of medical treatment/care and private and public accommodations. As the Legal Director, she provided direction and oversight to HALSA's legal team in housing, immigration and public benefits matters and supervised HALSA’s outreach efforts, public policy and amicus activities as well as instituting a State Bar Attorney Referral Panel.
Peggy joined The Gillam Law Firm in July 2011, where she represents state and federal employees in labor/employment discrimination matters and in class action cases. She is also an adjunct law professor at Southwestern University School of Law and an accomplished classical violinist.
